Safety alert on Keratin Complex products

The Department of Health and Children has issued an alert on safety grounds on two hair treatment product:

  • Keratin Complex Smoothing Therapy - Blonde Hair
  • Keratin Complex Smoothing Therapy - Natural Keratin Smoothing Treatment

Professional hairdressers use these products as hair treatment agents. Tests showed the products contained levels of formaldehyde in excess of the maximum authorised concentration.

The products also fail to display the required labelled warnings.

What to do

If you have this product, stop using it immediately and return it to the store from where it was purchased.

'Marcia Teixeira' hair products withdrawn

Photo of Marcia Teixeira hair treatment productThe Department of Health and Children has issued an alert on 'Marcia Teixeira’ Brazilian Keratin Treatment on safety grounds.

This product is for use as a hair treatment agent by professional hairdressers.

The product was tested and found to exceed the levels of formaldehyde permitted under the Cosmetics Directive 76/768/EEC, transposed by European Communities (Cosmetic Products) Regulations 2004 (as amended).

It has been reported that use of this product has resulted in stinging, watering eyes, blurred vision and tightness of breath.

It has been asked by the Department of Health and Children to remove this product and two other products from the market:

  • Marcia Texeira Advanced Brazilian Keratin Treatment and
  • Marcia Texeira Chocolate Extreme De-Frizzing Treatment

For further advice, contact the Medicines Unit at the Department of Health and Children.
